About Villajoyosa - La Vila Joiosa
From Benidorm to Alicante, there is a 45 km stretch of the Costa Blanca coastline that has a variety of beach types: long, fine sandy beaches, secluded pebble and rocky beaches, and some rocky shores.
To get an idea of the beaches, please find below a list with some very short descriptions:
- Playa La Vila Joiosa (sandy beach): 100 meters away (our favourite beach!)
- Playa Varadero (stone and pebble beach): 2 km
- Playa El Paraíso (pebble beach, rocky and sandy beach): 2.8 km away
- Playa del Bol Nou (fine pebble beach, partial rough sandy beach): 3.4 km away
- Playa El Asparalló (fine pebble beach): 3.6 km away
- Playa del Torres (stone and pebble beach, little sandy): 3.8 km - about 50 minutes, directly along the coast!
- Playa Racó del Conill (stone e and cliffs, naturist): 6.8 km away
Nearly 30 km north of Alicante and 10 km south of Benidorm you will get to the picturesque fishing village Villajoyosa, often referred to as "La Vila". The picturesque old town, which could obtain much of their original character, is the main attraction for tourists. Relatively speaking. Because mass tourism definitely takes place somewhere else ...! Many of the colourful fisherman's cottages on the edge of the estuary of the Rio Amadorio have been faithfully restored and painted in recent years. A pretty and in the summer months shady palm promenade fringes the large sand beach and leads to the fishing port and marina (el puerto). The market hall (el mercado) in the heart of the centre is open every day during the week.

In addition to the colorfully painted houses, Villajoyosa is also known for the festival of Moros y Cristianos, which takes place every year during the last week of July. As in many Spanish cities, the Reconquista is recalled, the expulsion of the Moors through the Christians. The Fiestas take place for 7 days and are a huge spectacle. Especially worthwhile are the parades in which the various "companies" march in traditional robes and perform themselves dancing and riding along the main street: one evening they are dedicated to the Moors, the other evening to the Christians. The highlight of the celebrations is a battle in front of the beach at dawn.
In earlier times, Villajoyosa was economically sustained on boatbuilding, fishing and the production of chocolate. Even today, exists the famous chocolate factory Valor with adjoining chocolate museum, which celebrated its 125th anniversary in 2006 and which you can visit. A trip to the Valor- Chocolatería is worth it. Your find it at Avenida Pianista Gonzalo Soriano 13 (Tram station Creueta ). The entry is free. You have to draw a card at the entrance. Only at most 50 people per group of visitors are allowed. Since you can only make a reservation for large groups, it is advisable to be there in time. Free guided tours in different languages are offered several times a day. The tour lasts 30 to 40 minutes.
The opening hours of the Valor Museo Del Chocolate :
Monday to Saturday: 10am to 1pm
Monday to Friday: 4pm to 8pm
Another attraction nearby, about 5 km to the north, is the leisure and adventure park Terra Mítica / Parque de atracciones Terra Mítica near Benidorm. This deals with topics from the Wild West and the Mediterranean. And who is already on the way to fully tourist entertainment, disco, dance club and so on and who does not want to miss during their holiday the infrastructural meltdown, a visit to Benidorm is recommended. The incarnate dream of all real estate, gastronomy and mass tourism developers...
